Role details
Overview
The Manufacturing Engineer plays a critical role in the quoting, planning, and execution of composite component and assembly manufacturing. This hybrid role is responsible for applying engineering principles and cost analysis to develop accurate estimates and efficient manufacturing plans. The successful candidate will support new business opportunities, product development, and production optimization by collaborating with engineering, business development, and operations teams. The role also involves working with customers, interpreting technical data, developing manufacturing routers, and ensuring compliance with quality and regulatory standards.
Duties
- Work closely with Business Development and customers to develop competitive quotes, including labor, materials, hardware, tooling, and NRE/NRC costs.
- Analyze and interpret purchase orders, technical drawings, and customer datasets to develop manufacturing strategies.
- Translate customer specifications into clear manufacturing plans and routers while ensuring compliance with AS9100, NADCAP, and other applicable standards.
- Assist in the design and planning of manufacturing processes, including layout, workflow, and production methods to improve efficiency.
- Support quoting prioritization and manage the active RFQ list to ensure timely response.
- Coordinate with Purchasing for sourcing components and materials during the estimation process.
- Support the development of tooling scopes of work and tool repair requirements.
- Assist in implementing lean manufacturing principles and identifying cost-saving initiatives.
- Support quality control efforts by identifying opportunities for process improvements and supporting internal audits.
- Provide technical support across departments and contribute to cross-functional initiatives.
- Conduct strategic assessments and provide input into bid/no-bid decisions.
- Maintain professional, collaborative, and customer-focused interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field preferred.
Experience: Three to five years of relevant education or experience in engineering or related field; preferably in a manufacturing environment. Experience with estimating aerospace composites components, including the following equipment and processes, is preferred:
- Interpretation of specifications, parts lists (PL), and component schematics
- CAD model manipulation and reading/interpreting 2D technical drawings
- Composite hand layup and filament winding (tow-preg materials)
- Autoclave and platen press curing processes
- Honeycomb core processing techniques
- Ultrasonic non-destructive inspection (NDI) of composite assemblies
- Operation of 5-axis CNC machining centers
- Adhesive bonding and mechanical assembly methods
- Component sourcing and procurement
- Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- 5+ years of experience in composites manufacturing, including hand layup and sub-tier component estimation.
- Strong understanding of composite fabrication techniques, materials, and tooling requirements.
- Demonstrated experience with quoting and estimating in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Ability to analyze and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and datasets.
- Proven success in fast-paced, technically complex environments requiring flexibility and adaptability.
