DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER
Federal Foam Technologies, a leader in custom fabrication of flexible cellular and plastic materials, is seeking a Development Engineer to join its team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The position includes the following responsibilities; other duties may be assigned.
- Develops expert knowledge of materials and processes currently or potentially used across the company.
- Develops expert knowledge of applications for said materials and processes.
- Meets with current and prospective customers to develop and sustain business opportunities.
- Consults with supplier representatives on specifications, costs, quality standards, and related matters involving materials, tooling, and equipment.
- Sources materials for new applications and identifies suitable replacements for existing materials.
- Reviews blueprints, specifications, and other documentation to assess the feasibility of product proposals.
- Develops cost estimates for new business opportunities, including prototype and production parts.
- Leads and supports the preparation and execution of Engineering Job Orders.
- Coordinates the use of production equipment for development projects with manufacturing planners and supervisors across the company.
- Coordinates and supports development, manufacture, or purchase of processes and tooling, including their implementation in production as needed.
- Provides technical guidance and training on manufacturing and processing methods, materials, properties, advantages, and limitations.
- Supports acoustical development projects, including sound measurement using various methods.
- Evaluates findings to develop new concepts, products, equipment, processes, or applications.
- Prepares specification sheets identifying acceptable parts and materials for specific applications.
- Creates and updates purchased-part records in the ERP system.
- Helps establish production standards for new materials, processes, and parts.
- Prepares or oversees the preparation of machine and part programs using CAD/CAMor other software.
- Reviews project documents for completeness, proper formatting, and compliance with contract requirements.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical field from a four-year college or university plus five years of experience is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with thermoforming, composites, or other plastic fabrication methods is preferred.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents, and to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, and the business community.
- Ability to present information effectively and professionally to employees at all levels of FFT, supplier representatives, and customer groups.
- Ability to define problems, gather data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and interpret complex technical instructions presented in mathematical or diagram form involving abstract and concrete variables.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and a working knowledge of ERP or manufacturing software are required. Strong proficiency in CAM programming, AutoCAD, CREO, or similar design and drafting software is also required.
- Demonstrated ability to read and understand blueprints and interpret design sketches and concepts.
- Working knowledge of inspection and measurement techniques, plus experience in mechanical design, woodworking, metal fabrication, and machining, is required. Experience with process analysis and electrical or electronic systems is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
- Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
- Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.
