Overview

Composite Engineering Manager

Blade Services | Technical & Field Engineering Leadership

Full-Time | U.S.-Based | Up to 30-40% Travel

About The Role

Sky Climber Renewables is seeking an experienced Composite Engineering Manager to own the technical engineering function supporting our wind turbine blade inspection and repair division. This role will serve as SCR's senior technical authority for composite blade repair while leading the Technical Advisors and Field Advisors who support crews in the field.

The Composite Engineering Manager will own engineered repair solutions, repair procedures, work instructions, layup schedules, damage assessment criteria, technical approval processes, and engineering support for field execution. The role will work across Operations, Quality, Training, and Commercial teams and serve as a key technical interface with wind turbine OEMs and asset owners.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead SCR's composite engineering function and serve as the senior technical authority for wind turbine blade inspection and repair.
  • Manage and develop Technical Advisors and Field Advisors supporting Blade Services projects and field crews.
  • Assess complex structural blade damage and determine appropriate repair pathways, technical requirements, and engineering approval needs.
  • Develop, review, and approve engineered repair solutions for spar cap, shear web, bond line, root, core, lightning, and other structural blade damage.
  • Create and maintain repair procedures, work instructions, layup schedules, laminate stacking sequences, scarf geometry, core replacement details, cure requirements, and bond-line specifications.
  • Define engineering review thresholds, acceptance criteria, inspection hold points, quality gates, and documentation requirements for blade repairs.
  • Provide final technical escalation for Technical Advisors, Field Advisors, field leadership, and repair crews on complex or non-standard repairs.
  • Interpret OEM structural repair manuals and customer-specific standards and ensure technical requirements are translated into consistent field execution.
  • Support root-cause analysis, corrective actions, warranty issues, rework, and technical non-conformances.
  • Represent SCR in customer and OEM technical reviews, qualification audits, capability assessments, and supplier approval processes.
  • Support RFP/RFQ responses and advise Commercial and Operations teams on technical risk, scope feasibility, repair effort, and engineering assumptions.
  • Develop technical standards, training content, competency criteria, and scalable engineering systems that strengthen SCR's blade repair capabilities.
  • Evaluate new composite materials, repair methods, tooling, and inspection technologies that can improve safety, quality, cycle time, or cost.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Composites Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline with significant composites experience.
  • 10+ years of relevant composites engineering experience, including significant experience with wind turbine blades, large structural composites, or comparable composite structures.
  • Demonstrated experience developing repair procedures, work instructions, layup schedules, and engineered composite repair solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of glass and carbon reinforcements, epoxy and polyester systems, wet layup, vacuum infusion, core materials, adhesive bonding, and cure control.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess structural composite damage and develop or approve technically sound repair solutions.
  • Experience reading and applying engineering drawings, specifications, OEM repair manuals, and technical standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability, including experience managing, directing, or mentoring technical personnel.
  • Strong technical writing, documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with field technicians, operations leaders, customers, and engineering organizations.
  • Ability to travel to field sites and customer locations and work at or around operating wind turbines.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in composites, materials, mechanical, aerospace, or structural engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • ACMA Certified Composites Technician (CCT) or comparable composites certification.
  • Previous experience with a wind turbine or blade OEM, blade manufacturer, independent blade engineering firm, or specialized blade service provider.
  • Experience with FEA or structural analysis of composite laminates and bonded joints.
  • NDT experience involving ultrasonic testing, thermography, tap testing, shearography, or similar inspection methods.
  • GWO training and utility-scale wind field experience; rope access or suspended-platform familiarity.
  • Experience with technical documentation and engineering governance within an ISO-certified quality management system.
  • Multi-platform experience across GE Vernova, Vestas, Nordex, Siemens Gamesa, or legacy turbine fleets.

Physical, Travel & Work Requirements

  • U.S.-based position with travel of approximately 30-40% to company locations, wind farms, customer locations, OEM facilities, and other project locations.
  • Combination of office or remote engineering work and active wind farm environments.
  • Ability to work at or around operating wind turbines and active blade repair operations.
  • Ability to climb turbine towers and work at height when required, subject to applicable training and medical requirements.
  • Ability to comply with SCR safety requirements, customer site requirements, PPE standards, and stop-work authority expectations.
