Role details

What to Expect

Battery cells are the common denominator for every Tesla product. Our product requirements demand ground-up cell architectures with state-of-the-art performance, manufactured at volumes that are orders of magnitude higher than the products they power. Our environment is fast-paced and incredibly exciting, so being passionate and self-motivated to push your limits is critical. Our team works with engineering groups across various disciplines, requiring strong communication skills and a team-first mentality. You will work alongside seasoned industry experts, high aptitude recent graduates, and people from every stage in between.

We are looking for anyone with an exceptional ability to solve problems in both individual and team settings. Our team is heavily focused on cell materials design and qualification. Your responsibility will be developing and executing tests quantifying electrochemical and physical properties of advanced electrolytes, interpreting data, and accelerating qualification of new electrolyte systems.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, and execute tests to quantify electrochemical and physical properties of advanced electrolytes with high accuracy, including conductivity, impedance, electrochemical stability, viscosity, density, salt diffusivity, cation transport number, and phase behavior
  • Build, run, and debug experiments directly in custom fixtures and non-standard cells and define test hardware needs with mechanical engineering collaborators
  • Interpret characterization data and assign result differences to electrolyte behavior, test methods, fixtures, or assembly flaws
  • Reproduce and adapt test methods from materials development partners, and communicate key results, gaps, and risks
  • Maintain test equipment and high standards of data quality, with records complete enough for others to repeat the method
  • Plan, prioritize, and communicate the status of lab testing to hit project deadlines

What You'll Bring

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience developing and executing electrochemical or physical-property test methods
  • Experience testing electrolytes, liquids, or other fluids in custom fixtures or non-standard setups
  • Ability to set up, execute, and debug experiments directly
  • Knowledge of safe laboratory practice with hazardous chemicals
  • Experience developing test methods for materials that require specialized handling or containment strongly desired
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work with electrolyte, mechanical, and analytical partners
  • Familiarity with analytical methods such as GC, NMR, Karl Fischer
