Job Description

JOB TITLE: Injection Molding Engineer

REPORTS TO: Maintenance and Facilities Manager

FLSA: Exempt

JOB SUMMARY: Develop, validate, optimize, and support injection molding processes for new and existing plastic components. Utilize scientific molding principles, process engineering methodologies, and statistical analysis to establish robust manufacturing processes that consistently meet customer specifications for quality, delivery, and cost requirements. Collaborate with Production, Tooling, Quality, Design, and Project Engineering teams to ensure successful product launches, continuous improvement initiatives, and efficient manufacturing operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, establish, document, and validate robust molding processes for new and existing injection molds using scientific molding techniques.
  • Lead mold qualifications including IQ, OQ, and PQ activities, DOE studies, process capability analyses, and validation protocols.
  • Optimize manufacturing performance through cycle time reduction, scrap reduction, machine utilization improvements, and overall process efficiency enhancements.
  • Evaluate resin behavior and processing windows to ensure stable production under normal material and environmental variation.
  • Partner with Tooling, Design, Quality, Production, and Project Engineering teams to ensure tooling and processes meet customer requirements and production objectives.
  • Troubleshoot molding, tooling, material, and equipment issues using a structured, data-driven approach.
  • Establish and maintain approved process parameters and work instructions for production personnel.
  • Support production by responding to process-related issues, conducting root cause analyses, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Analyze process data using statistical methods to monitor process capability and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Document mold performance, processing history, troubleshooting activities, validation results, and recommendations for tooling or process improvements.
  • Interface directly with customers regarding process development, qualifications, technical issues, and manufacturing requirements as needed.
  • Participate in customer meetings, design reviews, and project launch activities.
  • Stay current on emerging molding technologies, process controls, automation systems, resins, and industry best practices.
  • Assist in resolving customer complaints and corrective action requests related to molding processes and manufacturing performance.
  • Train and mentor Process Technicians, Set-Up Technicians, and other manufacturing personnel on molding processes, troubleshooting methods, and scientific molding principles.
  • Promote and support safety, environmental, ergonomic, and continuous improvement initiatives throughout the manufacturing organization.
  • Effectively communicate technical information and project status to management and cross-functional teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • *Education/Experience.* Bachelor’s degree with relevant studies in technical Engineering Processes. Five years manufacturing experience in plastic injection molding with relevant knowledge of resins and plastic materials preferred.
  • *Computer Skills.* Ability to operate personal computer, copy machine and telephone required. Proven accuracy in keyboarding skills to enter data correctly and efficiently. Above average knowledge of enterprise business systems required. Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word preferred.
  • *Language Skills.* Proven reading and written communication skills required with the ability to comprehend, and interpret instructions and standards from manuals or other materials. Effective correspondence skills with professionals required. Ability to effectively present information or training to employees, in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • *Mathematical Skills.* Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Knowledge of rate, ratios, percent and use trigonometry. Ability to read and understand complicated designs and drawings.
  • *Reasoning Ability.* Ability to interpret standards or guidelines and apply to actual variables required. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • *Other Skills and Abilities.* Willingness to attend conferences, classes or training to enhance and update knowledge and skills. Ability to work with various personnel in departments to reach consensus on work related issues. Must be able to maintain confidentiality and a professional relationship with fellow workers and the general public.
  • *Supervisory Responsibilities.* Yes. Process Engineers.
  • *Physical Demands.* While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is frequently required to sit/stand and move throughout the facility. Normal or corrected to normal vision is required with good color vision, close vision, and ability to use microscope and adjust focus. May be required to move or transport up to 55 lbs.
  • *Work Environment.* The duties of this job are executed in a climate-controlled environment with few temperature or humidity extremes. Noise levels will vary from very low to moderate depending on the location that the work is performed within the facility. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
