Essential Job Duties
We are seeking to hire an Assistant Professor whose work centers on developing AI-driven approaches that strengthen decision-making in complex, real-world settings. Situated within the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at North Carolina State University (NCSU), this work advances innovation across civil, construction, and environmental engineering, with an emphasis on solid waste and materials management and lifecycle assessment.
We invite applications from scholars with strong domain expertise in solid waste engineering while also grounded in underlying fundamental aspects, which could include environmental chemistry, microbiology, geoenvironmental engineering, and/or systems analysis, and who have integrated AI into their research. We look for researchers who will develop programs with impacts on the design, planning, and operations of solid waste management systems of the future, the sustainability of resource management, and the resilience and safety of communities.
The experience you will bring will contribute to one or more of the following areas of solid waste management:
- Municipal solid waste management/treatment
- Fate and transport of contaminants of emerging concern in engineered solid waste management systems
- Management/treatment of societal wastes (e-waste, textiles, organic waste, plastics/microplastics)
- Resource and energy recovery
- Landfill gas emissions
- Landfill leachate management/treatment
- Lifecycle assessment and techno-economic analysis applied to solid waste management
This opportunity may be a strong fit for individuals whose work develops and applies artificial intelligence to real-world engineering challenges and who are driven by complex systems, societal impact, and the advancement of resilient, sustainable infrastructure.
