Job Summary
Lay-Up Technician is a hands-on role, whose primary responsibility is performing a wide variety of composite layup, vacuum bagging, mold inspection and leak checks. This role ensures adherence to strict quality standards by following engineered specifications, work instructions, lay-up schemes to successfully yield a conforming product.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform hand layup of composite materials, including prepregs, fabrics, adhesives, and films to assemble multi-piece and complex molds to yield conforming composite structures
- Preparation of molds and tools for layup process, to include application of sealants and release agents
- Ensure proper fiber orientation, ply sequence, material placement, and part configuration
- Perform vacuum bagging, debulking, and preparation for curing processes including leak checks
- Verify thermocouples are in good working condition
- Maintain material handling controls, including freezer life, out-time tracking, and cleanliness requirements
- Inspect work for conformity to specifications prior to cure
- Complete required manufacturing and quality documentation
- Support rework and continuous improvement activities
- May assist with composite oven processing or autoclave operation, including final demolding of parts after curing
- Adhere to safety, environmental, and quality system requirements
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including PPE usage and handling hazardous materials (resins)
- Adhere to all safety regulations and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) prevention policies
Qualifications & Experience
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience:
- 1-3 years prior experience in composite layup, aerospace manufacturing, or related field preferred
- Skills:
- High attention to detail
- Ability to read and interpret work instructions and relevant documentation
- Hand dexterity/coordination: Job requires a lot of specific finger movements and hand layup techniques
- Understanding of composite materials, fiber orientation, and lamination techniques preferred
- Ability to work in controlled environments, including PPE requirements
- Basic math and measurement skills

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- The employee is frequently required to stand for an extended period of time.
- Walk; use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.
- Must be a U.S. Person (Resident Alien or US Citizen) under 22 CFR 120 (due to ITAR Restrictions)
