Essential Job Duties

The Lampe Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is a supportive, highly collaborative community driven by a shared mission: to improve human quality of life through rigorous study, analysis, research, and the design and translation of innovative technologies that benefit the people of North Carolina and the broader global community.

In this role, candidates will join a vibrant department that values interdisciplinary thinking and real-world impact. We seek outstanding faculty candidates conducting research in areas that complement or expand our strengths in Biomedical Microdevices, Rehabilitation Engineering, Biomedical Imaging, Pharmacoengineering, and Regenerative Medicine. Lampe BME’s mission is to “Unite Engineering and Medicine to Improve Lives,” and our goal is to make an impact through ideation, translation, and commercialization of technologies to have an impact on human health and well-being.

Candidates will have the opportunity to grow and sustain an independent research program while collaborating across engineering, basic sciences, and clinical disciplines. Patenting, licensing, and startup companies that license faculty’s University IP are highly encouraged. The position includes a primary appointment at NC State University with tenure home within the College of Engineering, access to shared resources at both NC State and UNC–Chapel Hill, and laboratory space located in Engineering Building 3 on NC State’s Centennial Campus—at the heart of the College of Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish, maintain, and grow an independent, externally funded research program in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary research collaborations with engineering faculty, basic science researchers, and/or clinical investigators.
  • Contribute to the department’s research mission through scholarship that advances biomedical technologies and improves human health.
  • Teach and contribute to undergraduate and graduate education in biomedical engineering, in areas aligned with your expertise.
  • Mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral trainees and contribute to a supportive, open academic environment.
  • Participate in service activities that support the department, college, and broader academic community.

If you are a scholar looking to build an impactful biomedical engineering research program in a collaborative environment, who is motivated by translating research into technologies that improve human health, and is energized by teaching, mentoring and shaping the next generation, we encourage you to apply.

This position is for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor in all areas related to Biomedical Engineering. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience. In addition to core responsibilities, there will be occasional opportunities to take on additional duties that support the department’s academic and research missions.

Other Responsibilities

Candidates will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate student education, likely teaching classes in areas of pharmacoengineering. Successful candidates are expected to establish active externally funded research programs and to achieve excellence in teaching and training at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Qualified candidates should have a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank requires evidence of scholarly productivity relative to career stage and clear potential to establish an independent, externally funded research program.

Appointment at the Associate Professor rank requires a sustained record of scholarly excellence, including peer-reviewed publications, successful external funding, and leadership in interdisciplinary research.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing biomedical engineering research that improves human health and quality of life.
  • Ability to develop and sustain an independent, externally funded research program.
  • Strong capacity for interdisciplinary collaboration with engineering faculty, basic science researchers, and/or clinical investigators.
  • Record of scholarly activity, including dissemination of research through peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to undergraduate and graduate education through teaching and mentoring.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to support research dissemination, collaboration, teaching, and training.
  • Alignment with, or potential to complement, departmental research strengths in biomedical microdevices, rehabilitation engineering, biomedical imaging, pharmacoengineering, or regenerative medicine.
  • Interest in translational research pathways, including commercialization and/or application in human clinical populations, where appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, mentoring, advising, and training students and trainees at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels.
  • Academic scholarship that will integrate well with the College of Engineering
  • Demonstrated leadership or coordination of interdisciplinary research initiatives or teams.
  • Experience securing external research funding as a principal investigator.
  • Research experience that demonstrates a clear pathway to translation, commercialization, clinical application, or protection of intellectual property, with a strong preference for bench-driven engineering science and collaboration across core engineering disciplines.
  • Experience engaging with external partners, including industry or clinical collaborators
