Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized and passionate engineer to support our composite materials qualification effort, leading to the development, certification, and production of our eVTOL aircraft. This individual will have an overall responsibility to characterize composite materials. This is an individual contributor role and requires daily onsite presence in Marina, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Own individual material qualification projects that feed the broader qualification program, while working independently with general direction from the team lead
  • Develop and implement FAA mandated material qualification test plans
  • Author and maintain materials, process, and test specifications and advise on appropriate selection of materials and processes for parts and products
  • Develop qualification plans, including process development and material characterization and coordinate with material & process test laboratory to execute engineering work orders
  • Analyze composite material properties and behaviors to optimize manufacturing processes
  • Screen and evaluate new materials and processes to optimize and enhance manufacturing throughput, including troubleshooting manufacturing processes to reduce quality non-conformances; participate in non-conformance disposition and corrective action processes
  • Interface internally and with suppliers on technical issues with composite raw materials, new materials and processes, manufacturing plans, and part fabrication
  • Partner cross-functionally with stress, manufacturing, quality, and certification teams on material and process decisions, and advise and mentor engineers and technicians on test methods and data interpretation

Required

  • B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, material science or a relevant discipline
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience
  • In depth understanding and experience with composite parts fabrication and structural bonding
  • Familiarity with ASTM and SACMA test standards
  • Excellent technical writing, computer and presentation skills
  • Understanding of statistical design allowables
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively & communicate effectively

Desired

  • M.S. in relevant discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in the aerospace industry
  • Hands-on material test laboratory experience
  • Familiarity with FAR Part 23, DOT/FAA/AR-00/47 and CMH-17G
  • Experience with automated fiber placement (AFP) or automated tape laying (ATL) materials and process development
  • Experience with composite bonded repair, including standards and practices developed by the Commercial Aircraft Composite Repair Committee (CACRC)
  • Aerospace background in advanced composites and bonded structures

Additional Information

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $113,500 - $194,000/year. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
