Position Summary

TROY is hiring a Toner Material Scientist for our Research & Development department to design, test and scale new MICR and security toners that become TROY intellectual property. This is an entry-level-eligible role: recent graduates in chemistry or engineering are encouraged to apply, and we will train you on toner science.

TROY Group develops and manufactures MICR and security printing solutions that protect documents from fraud. Our Wheeling, WV team formulates and produces specialty toners in-house, so R&D work moves from the lab bench to production scale-up under one roof. You will see your formulations become real products.

Key Responsibilities

Toner Formulation and Development

Apply chemistry and process knowledge to design new MICR, security, and specialty toners. Run lab batches, iterate on resin, magnetic oxide, charge control agent, wax and additive choices, and build TROY intellectual property.

Material Characterization and Testing

Analyze physical and chemical properties of OEM toner, lab batches, production batches, and finished goods: particle size, melt index, charge/resistance, DSC/TGA, rheology, and FTIR. Run print testing and interpret results.

Scale-Up and Product Release

Support lab-to-production scale-up in collaboration with Production and Quality Assurance, including on-site participation in production trials. Release new products under ISO-compliant procedures through the ERP system (formulas, BOMs, work instructions).

Documentation and Reporting

Write reports on methods, results, and conclusions; recommend next steps. Present progress to R&D leadership and cross-functional teams.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Work with raw material suppliers to qualify new materials and write raw material specifications
  • Troubleshoot formulation issues in development, scale-up and production
  • Conduct technical and patent research to support development plans and invention disclosures
  • Coordinate testing with third-party laboratories when needed
  • Meet or beat project development deadlines
  • Other duties as assigned to support business initiatives

Required Qualifications

  • BS (or higher) in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • 0'2 years of experience; recent graduates are encouraged to apply
  • Hands-on laboratory experience from coursework, research, co-ops or internships
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work on-site in Wheeling, WV

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate research, internship or co-op in polymers, colloids, coatings, inks, toners or powders
  • Exposure to analytical instruments: particle size analysis, DSC/TGA, rheometry, FTIR
  • Familiarity with design of experiments (DOE) and basic statistics
  • Exposure to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) or an ERP system
  • Interest in taking a product from lab concept to full-scale commercialization
