Position Overview
Pipeline Coatings Systems (PCS) is a small, independent company specializing in the research, development, and formulation of true-epoxy coatings for the pipeline industry.
PCS is seeking an experienced, hands-on Formulation Technician to support product development, formulation, testing, and small-batch manufacturing.
This is a flexible, part-time position ideally suited for someone with practical experience in coatings, chemical formulation, or specialty chemical manufacturing who is comfortable working independently in a small, informal operation. The successful candidate will be resourceful, adaptable, and capable of managing projects with limited day-to-day direction. They should be comfortable working in an environment where priorities may evolve, approaches are discussed and refined, and practical solutions are developed through hands-on experience and collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and modify coating formulations using established formulas and project requirements.
- Perform small-scale processing, blending, testing, and manufacturing of coatings.
- Calculate, weigh, measure, and verify raw materials for accurate batch preparation.
- Maintain detailed handwritten and electronic laboratory notebooks, formulation records, and test results.
- Conduct quality control testing and evaluate results against specifications.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, including scales and mixing/blending equipment.
- Assist with formulation development, troubleshooting, and product performance evaluations.
- Organize laboratory activities, materials, and equipment while managing project priorities independently.
- Follow applicable quality, regulatory, chemical handling, and workplace safety requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Comfort with an informal work environment without the need for extensive structure, formal performance metrics, or defined career advancement opportunities.
- Pride in performing hands-on technical work, working independently, and delivering quality results.
- Hands-on experience in paint, coatings, epoxy, chemical formulation, or related manufacturing.
- Strong working knowledge of chemical properties, material compatibility, and formulation interactions.
- Proficiency in formulation calculations, precise measurements, and batch preparation.
- Familiarity with laboratory testing, quality control, and technical documentation.
- Strong analytical, mechanical, and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and production records.
- A self-directed work style, sound judgment, and the ability to work with limited supervision.
- Adaptability and the ability to manage changing priorities and projects.
- A degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline is beneficial but not required. Practical experience and demonstrated technical competence are highly valued.
Work Environment & Schedule
- Part-time hours, Monday through Friday.
- Flexible workdays and hours based on active projects, formulation needs, and testing requirements.
- Generally scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
- No fixed daily schedule; hours are coordinated around project demands and mutual availability.
The successful candidate will appreciate the flexibility and autonomy of working in a small operation, where priorities can change, direction may be informal, and initiative, adaptability, and independent problem-solving are essential.
