A day in this role
From the moment you step onto the production floor, you are the guardian of process reliability for fiber optic cable manufacturing. You’ll start by scanning overnight SPC dashboards, isolating any special-cause variation, and prioritizing countermeasures. Mid-morning may take you to the extrusion line to trial a die change informed by yesterday’s DOE, then to a cross-functional huddle with Production, Quality, Maintenance, and R&D to align on a new product introduction plan.
Your afternoon could include vendor calls on an equipment upgrade, drafting or revising SOPs and work instructions, and closing the loop on root cause investigations using 5 Whys—always balancing throughput, cost, and product integrity.
What you will own
- Process development and optimization: Design, implement, and refine manufacturing processes for optical cable lines; apply data analysis to spot inefficiencies and drive corrective actions; build and maintain robust SOPs and work instructions.
- Quality and compliance: Partner with Quality Assurance to resolve defects, sustain product integrity, and uphold industry standards across the lifecycle.
- Equipment and technology: Collaborate with vendors on upgrades and reliability strategies; work with R&D to translate new cable designs into capable, stable processes.
- Continuous improvement: Lead Lean and Six Sigma initiatives to eliminate waste and elevate throughput; deliver cost-reduction projects that protect or improve quality.
- Troubleshooting and support: Provide on-the-floor technical support; conduct rigorous root cause analyses and implement permanent, preventative solutions.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or a closely related engineering field.
- Experience: About 1 year of hands-on manufacturing experience spanning manufacturing engineering, statistical planning techniques, business systems, project management, and/or quality control (internships or co-ops count).
- Domain knowledge (plus): Exposure to extrusion, polymer processing, and optical fiber handling.
- Skills: Analytical problem-solver with proficiency in SPC and data analysis tools; familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma; excellent communication and teamwork; able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced setting.
- Preferred: Background in telecommunications or fiber optic cable manufacturing; hands-on experience with extrusion, polymer handling, and die design.
Physical and work environment
- Operate in a manufacturing setting with exposure to production lines and machinery.
- Occasional material lifts and extended periods of standing are part of the job.
