Develop and improve coating, welding and special processes for turbine engine component manufacturing and repair
Worth knowing
Why it is interesting. Broad special-process ownership: GTAW, laser welding, APS/LPPS thermal spray, EBPVD, diffusion coatings and brazing on superalloys.
Might not be for you. Production-support focused with daily quality monitoring and RCCA firefighting — less open-ended R&D than a materials scientist might want.

Role details
The role will support the manufacturing and repairs of high-pressure turbine engine components. The Engineer will be responsible for supporting ongoing production needs, developing new processes, improving existing processes associated with coating and welding technologies and will report regularly on project updates, lead, or participate in customer meetings, and regularly communicate with various internal departments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop and standardize processes and parameters in the assigned special process area. Special processes include but are not limited to manual GTAW, laser fusion welding, laser powder welding, thermal spray coatings (APS, LPPS), overlay coatings (EBPVD), diffusion coatings (VPA, pack cementation), electroplating (precious metal plating), machining, laser processes, EDM, heat treatment, braze, chemical cleaning, acid stripping and automation. Ensure that processes meet quality requirements and operational objectives.
Publish technical reports, assist in development of work instructions, operator training material on special process procedures in the assigned technical area. Lead problem solving teams and conduct RCCAs on equipment and process related issues addressing manufacturing challenges. Assist in equipment and process troubleshooting. Challenge the status quo. Recommend and initiate changes in the present processes and/or equipment to improve safety, quality, productivity. Support new program launches and acceptance of new processes. Monitor daily quality and productivity results, react to problems as they occur.
Participate in design reviews with product engineers and repair development engineers. EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE: Bachelors Degree in Engineering required. (Metallurgical, Materials, Chemical, Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering preferred) 2+ years' of experience as a Welding Engineer Experience working experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred. Knowledge of gas turbine manufacturing processes such as welding, thermal spray, EBPVD, diffusion coatings, precious metal plating, heat treatment, chemical cleaning and stripping is preferred. Experience with robotic programing, PLC, automation, and control systems is desirable. Experience in the aviation industry is preferred.
Experience with superalloy metallurgy is preferred. Working knowledge of six sigma methodologies is desirable.
