Role details
A Snapshot of Your Day
As Combustion Lab Technician, you will support the quality assurance processes in the manufacturing of combustion components for large gas turbines. You will focus on two primary areas: Metallurgical Analysis & Quality Testing and Laboratory Operations & Documentation. This will involve hands-on sample preparation, microscopic evaluation of thermal spray coatings, mechanical testing and precise reporting of findings to support production quality.
Given the focus on materials quality, you will bring significant experience in a metallurgical laboratory environment, proficiency with standard lab equipment, a strong understanding of thermal spray coatings and the ability to work independently with general supervision.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Prepare metallurgical test samples for microscopic evaluation, including sectioning, mounting and polishing, primarily for thermal spray coatings.
- Perform microscopic evaluation of coatings to identify attributes such as porosity, cracks and unmelts, ensuring they meet quality specifications.
- Conduct micro and macro hardness testing on prepared samples to verify material properties.
- Perform mechanical tests, such as bend tests, and support advanced analysis like SEM as required by engineering.
- Read and interpret technical documents including drawings, blueprints and process specifications to ensure correct test procedures.
- Operate, maintain and calibrate standard laboratory equipment, including polishers, saws, microscopes and hardness testers.
- Document all test results precisely and accurately, preparing clear technical reports for engineering and management teams.
- Collaborate with supervisors, engineers and production staff to communicate test results and support quality inspections.
- Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols (EHS) and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
- Perform routine chemical analysis, such as acid-base titrations, as needed for process control.
What You Bring
- Associate’s degree or higher in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, Engineering Technology or a related technical field. Equivalent combination of education and relevant laboratory experience may be considered.
- 3 or more years of experience in a metallurgical, materials testing or quality laboratory environment.
- Experience preparing and evaluating metallurgical samples using microscopy techniques; experience with thermal spray coatings is preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, specifications and testing procedures.
- Experience operating laboratory testing equipment and preparing accurate technical documentation and reports.
- Candidates with more experience can be considered for a higher level or vice versa.
- Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
