The Softgel Formulation Scientist is responsible for designing, developing new softgel formulations and optimizing existing softgel formulations for dietary supplements. Responsible to wok on fill formulations (liquids, suspensions, or pastes) and gel mass formulations (gelatin, plasticizers, and non-animal alternatives like Starch, Carrageenan etc.) to ensure stability, safety, and scalability.

Job Summary

The Softgel Formulator leads bench-scale formulation development and process optimization for softgel products. This role involves selecting raw materials, executing pre-formulation testing, evaluating dietary ingredient compatibility, supporting tech transfer to commercial manufacturing while maintaining strict regulatory compliance and troubleshooting manufacturing issue related to the softgel formulations.

Report To: Director of R&D

Key Responsibilities

  • Design fill liquid/suspension formulations and gelatin and vegetarian shell compositions (including plasticizers, colorants, and enteric coatings) tailored to specific active ingredients.
  • Perform physical and chemical compatibility studies between the inner fill formulation and the gel ribbon/shell.
  • Design and oversee accelerated and real-time stability studies to evaluate shelf-life, leakage, cross-linking, and degradation.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing department and encapsulation operators to transfer lab-scale formulas to commercial softgel encapsulation machinery.
  • Resolve technical issues of commercial batches related to capsule leakage, ribbon thickness, drying times, oxidation, fill precipitation, degradation, Cross-linking, out of specifications, other physical defects etc.
  • Prepare standard operating procedures (SOPs), master manufacturing formulas and technical reports in compliance with FDA and cGMP guidelines.
  • Perform pilot/ lab scale R&D trials as needed. Must be able to lift heavy raw materials for pilot batches.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s, in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 2–5+ years in formulation R&D with softgel encapsulation.

Technical Skills

  • Deep understanding of lipid chemistry, surfactants, co-solvents, gelatin, plasticizers (glycerin, sorbitol), and alternative plant-based polymers.
  • In-depth knowledge of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and FDA regulations.
  • Effective communication skills to work across multi-disciplinary teams.

Pay: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
