Role details
The Cell Testing Specialist is responsible for executing and supporting laboratory activities associated with lithium-ion coin cell fabrication, electrochemical testing, data analysis, and process optimization. This position serves advanced hands-on expertise while supporting the laboratory's research, development, and product qualification objectives. The Cell Testing Specialist plays a critical role in the end-to-end evaluation of Syrah's battery-grade graphite materials, from graphite sample preparation and electrode processing to coin cell assembly, electrochemical testing, and data collection.
The position is responsible for executing laboratory test methods, operating and maintaining testing equipment, troubleshooting technical issues, and generating reliable performance data to support material development, quality control, and customer qualification programs. The role also contributes to laboratory operations through technical training, continuous improvement initiatives, and adherence to laboratory standards, safety requirements, and quality management systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct slurry mixing and electrode fabrication activities.
- Perform coin cell assembly activities in an argon-filled glovebox.
- Execute electrochemical testing programs, including formation, cycling, rate capability, and performance evaluation.
- Monitor testing activities and identify abnormalities or performance issues.
- Maintain cell assembly and testing records in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Analyze electrochemical test data and prepare technical summaries and reports.
- Conduct root-cause investigations for cell failures and unexpected test results.
- Assist with benchmarking studies involving Syrah materials and competitor or customer reference materials.
- Support process development and optimization activities related to electrode fabrication and cell assembly.
- Contribute to the development of new testing methodologies and best practices.
- Support daily laboratory operations and testing schedules.
- Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained, calibrated, and operating properly.
- Perform routine troubleshooting of battery cyclers, gloveboxes, coaters, rheometers, balances, and other laboratory equipment.
- Maintain laboratory inventory and monitor consumable usage.
- Assist with procurement planning and material forecasting.
- Support competency assessments and qualification activities.
- Provide technical guidance during laboratory experiments and testing activities.
- Assist in developing training materials and work instructions.
- Follow and support laboratory SOPs, work instructions, and quality requirements.
- Maintain accurate technical records, test reports, and laboratory documentation.
- Support DMS document control and continuous improvement activities.
- Demonstrate leadership in laboratory safety and housekeeping practices.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures, risk assessments, and company policies.
- Participate in safety inspections, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in lithium-ion battery research, battery testing, or cell manufacturing.
- Hands-on experience with coin cell assembly, electrochemical testing, and laboratory equipment, including gloveboxes, battery cyclers, rheometers, mixers, vacuum ovens, and coating equipment; expected to maintain consistent cell quality and equipment uptime and readiness.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data-analysis software, with experience analyzing electrochemical performance data and producing accurate, timely technical reports.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, problem-solving, communication, and technical writing skills, with the ability to work independently while supporting team objectives.
- Demonstrated commitment to data quality, laboratory safety and quality requirements, and continuous improvement.
- Ability to lift at least 25 lbs. and stand for prolonged periods.
