Role details

Intern, Laser Source Reliability Term: May to August 2027 Please note: Position location is on-site in San Jose Office There is no immigration (except F1) or relocation support for this position Posting expires upon application threshold Position Description Ayar Labs, the global leader in optical I/O chiplets, is harnessing silicon photonics to revolutionize the scaling of AI compute hardware. Ayar Labs is shattering AI data bottlenecks by moving data at the speed of light. As pioneers of co-packaged optics (CPO), we are using light instead of electricity to move data faster, further, and with a fraction of the energy needed to fuel the explosive growth of AI models.

Backed by industry giants like NVIDIA, AMD and Intel and manufactured in partnership with the world’s leading semiconductor ecosystem, Ayar Labs’ co-packaged optics solution is key to unleashing next-generation AI scale-up architectures. Working closely with the laser module reliability team, the intern will: Build an understanding of the adhesion failure mechanism and identify the relevant contributing variables (substrate material and surface preparation, epoxy selection, curing conditions). Design a structured Design of Experiments (DOE) to isolate the dominant variables. Define and apply the appropriate environmental stress (85C/85% RH damp heat).

Execute testing and analyze the resulting data. Translate findings into actionable recommendations for improving adhesion robustness. Intern Skillset Needed Background in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Familiarity with adhesives/epoxies, surface preparation, and basic surface chemistry concepts. Working knowledge of (or willingness to learn) statistical experimental design methods, i.e. Design of Experiments (DOE). Comfort with data analysis tools such as Excel, JMP, Minitab, or Python. Hands-on lab skills: careful sample handling, precision measurement, and environmental chamber/test equipment operation.

Strong documentation habits and attention to detail for tracking experimental variables and results Education Requirements Candidate should be actively pursuing a degree in Photonics, Material Science, Physics, or related field NOTE TO RECRUITERS: Principals only. We are not accepting resumes from recruiters for this position. Remuneration for recruiting activities is only applicable subject to a signed and executed agreement between the parties. Please don’t send candidates to Ayar Labs, and do not contact our managers.
