Role details
Overview The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Advanced Biomaterials and Precision Theranostics . Desired areas of expertise include foundational research in biomaterials engineering that synergistically leverages cross-cutting expertise spanning areas of Biomedical AI, Bioelectronics and Biosensing, Advanced Manufacturing, Point-of-Care Diagnostics, and Microphysiological Models.
Potential areas of interest include (but are not limited to) AI-driven biomaterials engineering, portable diagnostics for therapeutic guidance, organ-on-chip models aligned with NIH’s New Approach Methodologies endeavor, ML/AI-driven big data analytics for diagnostic and prognostic applications in precision medicine, and cutting-edge translational technologies that can be applied to both civilian and military healthcare. The ideal candidate will strongly advance the joint engineering-medicine translational mission of the CWRU BME department, with impactful contributions to undergraduate and graduate education, and sustained research support from federal and non-federal sources.
Outstanding candidates at the Assistant Professor rank will be considered for an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. In recognition of the interdisciplinary nature of this field, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to consider a secondary or joint appointment (up to 25%) in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering or the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
This position is part of an ambitious faculty hiring plan this year within the Case School of Engineering and is in support of the President’s and Provost’s Faculty 100 Initiative to hire at least 100 new tenure and tenure-track faculty at Case Western Reserve University ( https://case.edu/provost/initiatives/faculty-100 ) by 2028 in areas that address global challenges. CWRU BME is a premier academic and research department, operating jointly under Case School of Engineering (CSE) and Case School of Medicine (SOM).
The department currently has 37 primary faculty members and numerous affiliated faculty, leading education and research in the areas of biomaterials and nanomedicine, immunoengineering, regenerative medicine, neural engineering and neurotechnologies, biomedical imaging, and artificial intelligence in health and disease. Research in CWRU BME is supported by an excellent ecosystem of federal, philanthropic and industry partnerships, with significant translational impact on advancing innovations and discoveries to treating disease and improving human health. The department also has a large footprint in the newly opened Roger E.
