Job Description

The Senior Bags Extrusion Process Engineer owns and advances polymer film extrusion processes that produce tubing for packaging applications. The role combines senior technical process leadership, direct leadership of the Process Technician team, and data-driven continuous improvement. Working closely with Production, Maintenance, Quality, and Product Development, this position is responsible for improving process capability, reliability, yield, equipment performance, and safety while ensuring effective technical support across manufacturing operations.

Process Ownership & Technical Leadership

  • Serve as the senior technical resource for extrusion process performance and independently diagnose complex issues involving materials, rheology, temperature control, die systems, bubble or web stability, thickness profile, and downstream handling.
  • Establish and sustain robust process control strategies, including centerlines, control plans, SPC, in-line vision systems, gauge control systems, and standard work.
  • Drive permanent solutions to recurring process and equipment issues through structured root cause analysis, statistical methods, and designed experiments (DOE), reducing variation, scrap, and unplanned downtime.

Process Technician Leadership & Manufacturing Support

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Process Technician team, establishing clear priorities, performance expectations, technical standards, and development plans.
  • Ensure the appropriate level of Process Technician coverage and technical support for daily production, troubleshooting, trials, start-ups, and manufacturing priorities.
  • Develop strong collaboration between Process Technicians, Production, and Maintenance to improve troubleshooting capability, equipment reliability, process stability, standard work, and overall manufacturing performance.

Continuous Improvement, Data & Digital Systems

  • Lead Lean and Six Sigma improvement initiatives focused on yield, rate, setup time, process stability, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and process performance monitoring tools; analyze trends and manufacturing data to identify abnormalities, losses, and improvement opportunities and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Utilize manufacturing data systems and expand MES capabilities to strengthen process control, material tracking, schedule adherence, and decision-making. Experience with Grafana, Seeq or Ignition is a plus.
  • Support daily management systems and build structured problem-solving capability across operators, technicians, and cross-functional partners.

Capital Projects & Technology Deployment

  • Lead extrusion-related equipment improvement and capital projects, including modifications, upgrades, new installations, and automation solutions.
  • Support equipment specification, vendor selection, FAT, SAT, commissioning, startup, and transition of successful technologies into production standards.

Product & Process Development

  • Partner with Product Development and Quality on resin qualifications, product transitions, raw material changes, process scale-ups, trials, and commercial launches.
  • Develop and implement sustainable technical solutions and process standards that support product performance and long-term manufacturing capability.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Strengthen quality and process risk management through SPC, FMEA, and corrective/preventive action methodologies.
  • Ensure process changes and technical solutions comply with safety, environmental, quality, and regulatory requirements, proactively identifying and mitigating EH&S and process risks.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Polymer, Plastics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of extrusion or polymer manufacturing experience, preferably in blown, cast, and/or oriented film, with demonstrated ability to independently solve complex technical challenges.

Technical & Operational Skills

  • Strong understanding of polymer processing, extrusion equipment, materials behavior, and film properties.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in statistical analysis, SPC, root cause analysis, DOE, Lean/Six Sigma methods, and project execution; Green Belt or Black Belt preferred.
  • Strong data analytics capability, including dashboard development, trend analysis, data visualization, and translation of process data into actionable manufacturing insights.

Leadership & Communication

  • Demonstrated people leadership capability, including coaching, developing, prioritizing, and managing technical resources in a manufacturing environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communicator with experience leading cross-functional teams and influencing across Production, Maintenance, Quality, and Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multilayer film structures, resin systems (PE, PA, EVOH, tie layers), and gauge/profile control.
  • Exposure to extrusion capital projects, automation, advanced process controls, and product commercialization.
  • Experience developing proprietary processes, technical standards, or intellectual property.

Working Conditions

  • Manufacturing environment with regular shop-floor engagement.
