About Gel4Med
Founded out of Harvard Innovation Labs, Gel4Med is a commercial-stage materials science company that designs and manufactures peptide-based therapeutic materials for wound care and tissue repair. Our patent-protected Smart Materials Platform™ applies synthetic biology and peptide science to design and engineer therapeutic materials with a high degree of customization. Our commercial products include G4Derm® Plus.
Our work is supported by investors and funders including Peter Thiel’s Breakout Labs, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, and MassVentures.
Gel4Med is an early-stage commercial company specializing in advanced biomaterials and regenerative solutions that improve patient outcomes in soft tissue reconstruction, wound care and surgical applications. Leveraging its patent-protected Smart Materials Platform™, the company uses synthetic biology and peptides to design highly customizable therapeutic materials. Gel4Med emphasizes science-driven innovation and practical accessibility, aiming to raise the standard of care across multiple therapeutic areas. The company’s work supports clinicians and healthcare systems by providing next-generation materials for complex clinical needs.
Team members contribute directly to innovations that impact patient care on a global scale.
Gel4Med brings products to market through channel partners rather than a direct salesforce. As a result, this position carries primary responsibility for the company's scientific engagement with clinicians in the field.
Position Summary
The Medical Science Liaison conducts scientific and clinical exchange with clinicians. Channel partner representatives maintain the customer relationship and arrange the meeting; the Medical Science Liaison leads the scientific discussion, presenting preclinical and clinical data and addressing questions around mechanism and scientific/clinical evidence at the level of detail the clinician requires. Where a clinician's questions go beyond what a commercial discussion can appropriately address, this position is the company's designated channel for scientific exchange.
The role also carries responsibility for evidence generation, developing clinician relationships into investigator-initiated studies (IIS) and case series, and working with Clinical Operations to conduct them.
Because Gel4Med has no direct salesforce, the Medical Science Liaison is the company's scientific voice with clinicians: at the bedside conversation, on the conference platform, in key opinion leader relationships, and in the published literature. The position reports to executive leadership, and field observations feed directly into the company's product development and clinical roadmap.
The role suits a PhD-level scientist or clinician who wants to stay technical in a field-facing position: someone who can defend a mechanism of action to a surgeon, synthesize a literature base, and build the slides that carry the argument. It is not a fit for a sales professional seeking a medical affairs title, or for a candidate who requires an established medical affairs team around them. Candidates who want a narrowly defined function with established support structures around it will find this environment difficult.
Responsibilities
Clinician engagement
- Lead scientific and clinical discussions with a variety of surgical specialties, including plastic and reconstructive surgeons, vascular surgeons, podiatrists, wound care specialists, among others and clinical staff in meetings arranged by channel partners
- Present at medical conferences, key opinion leader events, hands-on laboratory sessions, with material that is clear, well-structured, and technically sound
- Address clinicians' scientific questions within approved scientific exchange boundaries
Evidence generation
- Identify and engage clinicians and residency programs interested in conducting investigator-initiated studies and case series
- Work with Clinical Operations to conduct these studies, from scientific merit assessment and protocol input through to publication
- Track the peer-reviewed literature and work with R&D to produce white papers and evidence summaries
Field support and scientific content
- Develop and maintain a library of approved scientific and clinical reference materials for channel partner use
- Storyboard and build the scientific presentation materials used in the field: structure the argument, present the data clearly, and produce professional slide decks for clinician audiences, conference platforms, and channel partner use
- Respond to partner requests for clinical support within a 48-hour close-out standard
- Use clinical and commercial data platforms, including AcuityMD, to map the treatment landscape and prioritize scientific engagement
Product development input
- Document clinical feedback and recurring questions from the field and direct them to product development, R&D, and regulatory teams
- Partner with external collaborators and internal teams on grant writing and funded research
- Develop and maintain relationships with key opinion leaders, investigators, and senior clinical leadership
Performance Expectations
Performance is assessed against defined measures across four areas: the volume and quality of clinician engagement, investigator-initiated studies opened and advanced, responsiveness to channel partner requests for scientific support, and the scientific reference materials developed and put into use in the field. Specific baselines and targets are set jointly at hire and reviewed quarterly through the first year.
Required Qualifications
- PhD or postdoctoral training in biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomedical engineering, materials science, or a life sciences or clinical discipline; or an MS with three to five years of medical science liaison, medical affairs, or biomaterials product development experience
- Research or applied experience in biomaterials or tissue engineering, including working familiarity with scaffold- or matrix-based approaches to tissue repair
- Preferred- a minimum of two first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Demonstrated track record of scientific presentation to clinical audiences, including large-audience settings, with the ability to storyboard a scientific argument and build clear, professional slide decks
- Ability to engage credibly with clinical specialists and to adapt technical depth to the audience without compromising scientific accuracy
- Strong scientific writing, with the ability to synthesize a body of literature into a clear and defensible summary
- Ability to work alongside commercial colleagues while maintaining scientific independence
- Willingness to travel approximately 50% across US territories, by air and car, with a valid driver's license
- Ability to meet hospital and surgical-center vendor credentialing requirements, including immunization and background-check standards
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in wound care, biomaterials, plastic and reconstructive surgery, podiatry, or regenerative medicine, including familiarity with soft tissue repair and reconstruction and with chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and pressure injuries
- Experience initiating or supporting investigator-initiated studies or case series
- Experience in a regulated medical device environment (ISO 13485 / QSR)
- Experience supporting a distributor or channel-partner commercial model
Compensation and Benefits
Competitive base salary commensurate with experience, with milestone-based performance bonuses. Gel4Med benefits include:
- 401(k) plan
- Medical, vision, dental, and life insurance
- Paid maternity and paternity leave
- Flexible PTO, sick time, and federal holidays
- Employee stock option participation
- Employee wellness programs
- Remote work flexibility
- On-site parking
Application
Applications are accepted through LinkedIn. Candidates may also send a resume and a short cover letter to [email protected] outlining relevant scientific background, field experience, and publication record.
