Process Improvement Engineer
Improve injection molding production processes via DOE, SMED, OEE and validation at a medical plastics molder
Worth knowing
Why it is interesting. Hands-on floor role at a medical-focused molder: DOE, SMED and IQ/OQ/PQ validation on precision injection molding lines.
Might not be for you. Floor-based continuous improvement and validation work, not polymer R&D or formulation science.

Requirements
Essential Job Functions
- Go to the machine and observe — decisions come from what you see, not what is reported
- Run time observations and build the standard work charts from them
- Calculate takt, balance the line, and set the manpower from the balance
- Design stations and layouts in SolidWorks — to scale, with walk paths and material locations
- Design error-proofing in so the defect cannot be made, instead of inspecting for it
- Run trials and DOE to set a capable, repeatable process window
- Lead SMED, cycle time and OEE loss projects and prove the result
- Own validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), capability studies and Gage R&R
- Lead root cause work (5 Why, A3) and close it with verified effectiveness
- Train Supervisors, Team Leaders and operators — a process is not deployed until they are trained
- Respond to floor escalations the same shift, at the machine
Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- TPS: takt, standard work, jidoka, poka-yoke, SMED, pull, 5S, value stream mapping, kaizen and A3
- SolidWorks — parts, assemblies, 2D drawings, fixtures and to-scale layouts
- Standard work charts and how to build them from a real observation
- Workstation and cell layout — reach, motion, flow, spaghetti diagrams
- Injection molding process and scientific molding basics
- Cpk, Gage R&R, DOE and basic statistics
- PFMEA, control plans and validation for regulated product
- OEE and how to improve one variable without hurting another
