Worth knowing

Why it is interesting. Own products from initial formulation through scale-up into manufacturing at a specialty microsphere manufacturer.

Might not be for you. Heavy bio-assay focus (ELISA, NGS, immunocapture) rather than pure polymer science; seniority-heavy experience requirements.

Role details

Bangs Laboratories experience in microsphere synthesis and fine particle analysis have established us as a leading manufacturer of polymer, silica and magnetic microspheres for diagnostic, research, and flow cytometry applications. We also manufacture many specialty products to support validation and QC programs for analytical instruments, including a broad portfolio of fluorescent, count, size, and cell viability standards.

Bangs Laboratories is seeking an experienced and innovative Product Development Scientist to join our team! This position plays a key role in the development of new products, from initial research and formulation through scale-up and integration into manufacturing.

The ideal candidate will have a strong scientific background, hands-on laboratory experience, and expertise in functionalized or magnetic particles used in diagnostic, proteomic, and molecular applications. This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated scientist who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, leading development projects, and bringing new products to market.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and manage product development projects, including the development of custom products, particle conjugations, coatings, and new applications for standard and specialized particles.
  • Design, develop, and optimize particle-based products and applications to meet performance and quality requirements.
  • Develop and implement new assays, processes, and scale-up methods to successfully transition newly developed products into manufacturing and quality control systems.
  • Evaluate raw material suppliers, material lots, and quality to ensure consistency and compliance with established specifications and ISO procedures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support product development, manufacturing, quality control, and technical applications.
  • Provide technical expertise and troubleshooting support for standard and custom products.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and follow established quality management procedures.

Education & Experience

A degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Bioengineering, or a related scientific discipline is required, along with one of the following:

  • PhD with at least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Master's degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree with at least 10 years of relevant experience

Technical Qualifications

  • Experience working with functionalized or magnetic particles in diagnostic assays, proteomics, and/or next-generation sequencing (NGS) applications.
  • Experience developing particle-based assays or applications, such as ELISA, chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIA), immunocapture, or protein enrichment.
  • Familiarity with molecular assay development techniques, including nucleotide probe target enrichment, on-bead tagmentation, library normalization, solid-phase DNA enrichment, or mRNA enrichment.
  • Strong laboratory skills with the ability to independently design experiments, analyze results, and troubleshoot technical challenges.
  • Broad scientific knowledge and an understanding of product development processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with bioconjugation chemistry, particle-based diagnostic tests, or flow cytometry/multiplex assays.
  • Previous laboratory experience in an industrial research and development environment.
  • Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) software and quality management systems (QMS).
  • Knowledge of ISO and/or GMP manufacturing practices, including developing, writing, and following work instructions.
  • Experience transitioning products from research and development into manufacturing.

What Will Make You Successful

  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • A proactive, self-motivated approach with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to product quality and continuous improvement.
