JOB SUMMARY

Adelphi University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in chemistry that begins August 2027. A Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field is required; additional post-doctoral or industrial experience is desired. Preference will be given to applicants that are biochemists or physical chemists. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in general chemistry, physical chemistry or biochemistry, and on occasion advanced courses related to one’s field. Our new colleague will join an ACS-approved program where undergraduate research is embedded into our culture.

The successful candidate must therefore also be committed to establishing a high-quality research program with undergraduate researchers and be committed to becoming an outstanding teacher. We are especially interested in candidates from historically underrepresented communities and candidates who can help the department make the educational experience more inclusive for our diverse student populations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The teaching load is 18 credits with opportunities for research release. Our new colleague will teach undergraduate courses including lectures and laboratories.
  • The primary teaching assignment will be general chemistry, and biochemistry or physical chemistry. Other teaching responsibilities will include special topics courses related to their field.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to build and sustain an ongoing record of research with undergraduate students from diverse cultural backgrounds that will result in peer-reviewed publications and presentations by students at national meetings.
  • The successful candidate will contribute to service duties within the department, college, university, and at professional levels; engage in the mentoring and advising of chemistry and biochemistry majors; attend our weekly chemistry seminar along with the rest of our faculty members and majors; and collaborate with other faculty across the STEM disciplines.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates should have earned a Ph.D. in chemistry or a or a closely related, chemistry-intensive field. Additional post-doctoral or industrial experience is preferred.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the University’s goal of improving higher education for diverse and underrepresented students. We have a strong interest in ensuring that all candidates hired for faculty appointments share our commitment to educational access, equity, excellence, and diversity.

APPLICATION

Interested candidates must submit the following materials online at https://www.adelphi.edu/hr/careers/ to be considered.

  • Cover letter (maximum two-pages double-spaced) that explains why you are an excellent candidate for the job, why specifically you want to work at Adelphi, and anything other relevant information. Any candidate that is a tenure-track or tenured professor at another institution must explain why they desire to move to Adelphi.
  • Curriculum vitae. On the last page, please provide the names and email addresses of three academic references willing to write you a letter of recommendation. We will handle requesting the letters.
  • Statement of teaching philosophy-maximum two-pages double-spaced.
  • Research proposal appropriate for involving undergraduate students that is 3-7 pages double-spaced. References do not count towards the page limit. You must include a section titled “Research with Undergraduates” where you discuss how undergraduates can be involved in your research and that you understand that there are not graduate students in the chemistry department of Adelphi University.
  • We do not require transcripts in the application, but you will be expected to provide an official graduate transcript if you are invited for an in-person interview.
  • For questions, inquiries may be directed to Professor Dan Silverio, Associate Professor, Chair, Search Committee, at [email protected].
  • Review of applications will begin Nov 9, 2026 and continue until the position is filled. If the position is still posted on the Adelphi site, the position has not been filled.
  • This appointment is subject to final approval by the Adelphi University Board of Trustees.
