R&D Chemist – Formulation & Scale-Up
BS-level Formulation / Compounding roles on Crosslinked list a median of $88k (38 that show pay).
Formulate and scale up specialty chemical products from bench to full-scale production
Worth knowing
Why it is interesting. Short lab-to-plant path: design the experiment, run the pilot, and be on the floor for the first production batch at a 27-reactor toll manufacturer.
Might not be for you. Broad generalist scope across many chemistries and heavy cross-functional/customer support — less deep specialization than a dedicated polymer R&D group.
Heads-up: Written responses required

Job Overview
Jain Chem is a family-owned specialty chemical manufacturer in Taylors, SC, making custom and toll-manufactured products for major coatings, adhesives, building-materials, and textile companies since 1975. We're looking for an R&D Chemist to help with product and process development from bench through full-scale production.
This is a hands-on role with real range. You will work on diverse chemistries from simple blends to complex polymers. The path from lab to plant is short: you'll design the experiment, run the pilot, and be on the floor for the first production batch. You'll work directly with Manufacturing, Quality, Sales, and customers, and your work will have a visible impact on the business.
Responsibilities
- Develop and improve formulations, chemical processes, and test methods for new and existing products
- Design and run experiments, analyze results, and translate findings into manufacturing parameters
- Perform hands-on synthetic, polymer, and wet chemistry, including blending and analytical testing
- Run and interpret HPLC, FTIR, and physical-property testing
- Lead lab-to-plant scale-up, including pilot and production trials, process transfer, and commercialization
- Troubleshoot raw-material, formulation, process, and finished-product quality issues
- Provide technical support to Manufacturing, Quality, Sales, suppliers, and customers, including application support and formulation modifications
- Write clear technical reports, test procedures, lab records, and trial documentation
- Manage multiple projects at once, independently and with cross-functional teams
- Keep the lab safe, organized, and compliant
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a closely related field
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in a lab, pilot plant, or chemical manufacturing environment
- Proven experience in product or process development and formulation
- Strong wet chemistry and synthetic chemistry skills
- Experience with analytical instrumentation, including HPLC and FTIR
- Track record of scaling products from lab to plant and solving manufacturing problems
- Strong written and verbal communication, including with customers
