Worth knowing

Why it is interesting. Hands-on scientific molding with RJG cavity-pressure and decoupled molding on LCP, PPS and PBT micro-components.

Might not be for you. Hands-on molding experience is essential; tooling-only, design-only or management backgrounds are explicitly not a fit.

Position Overview

Cullerton Group is seeking a highly experienced Senior Precision Injection Molding Engineer to support advanced, high-precision manufacturing initiatives in Michigan.

This opportunity is ideal for an accomplished injection molding professional with extensive hands-on experience developing, optimizing, and validating processes for small, intricate thermoplastic components requiring exceptionally tight dimensional tolerances, potentially ±0.05 mm or tighter.

We are particularly interested in engineers with experience in automotive electrical connectors, miniature electronic components, medical devices, or other high-precision plastic manufacturing applications.

The ideal candidate combines strong scientific molding expertise with practical problem-solving skills and a proven ability to establish stable, repeatable, high-quality manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, validate, and optimize precision injection molding processes for small, complex thermoplastic components.
  • Establish stable processing windows using scientific molding principles and data-driven methodologies.
  • Troubleshoot dimensional variation, shrinkage, warpage, short shots, flash, and other molding defects.
  • Evaluate and optimize molding parameters, tooling performance, material behavior, and process capability.
  • Conduct or support mold trials, process validation, and new tooling launches.
  • Apply scientific molding techniques, including DOE, viscosity studies, gate-freeze analysis, and cavity-pressure monitoring, as applicable.
  • Collaborate with tooling, design engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Improve dimensional accuracy, process repeatability, production efficiency, and overall product quality.
  • Provide senior-level technical expertise and recommendations for precision injection molding applications.

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive hands-on experience in thermoplastic injection molding process engineering; 10+ years preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience personally developing, optimizing, and troubleshooting injection molding processes.
  • Strong background in manufacturing small, intricate, high-precision plastic components.
  • Experience working with tight dimensional tolerances, ideally ±0.05 mm or better.
  • Solid understanding of scientific molding principles, process optimization, and mold tooling.
  • Experience troubleshooting dimensional variation and establishing repeatable manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with engineering thermoplastics such as PBT, LCP, PPS, PA66, or comparable materials.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, dimensional inspection, statistical process control (SPC), and process capability.
  • Strong analytical, technical problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • RJG Master Molder I or II certification, or equivalent scientific molding expertise.
  • Experience with RJG eDART, decoupled molding, cavity-pressure monitoring, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with Moldflow, Moldex3D, DOE, or advanced process validation.
  • Automotive electrical connector housings, sensor components, or miniature electronic parts.
  • Micro injection molding, thin-wall components, insert molding, or high-cavitation precision tooling.
  • Medical device or other high-tolerance thermoplastic manufacturing experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Plastics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent extensive hands-on experience will also be considered.

What We're Looking For

We are especially interested in candidates who can provide specific examples of precision injection molding processes they have personally developed or optimized, including:

  • Types and sizes of components manufactured.
  • Materials and molding technologies used.
  • Dimensional tolerances achieved and validated.
  • Scientific molding techniques applied.
  • Improvements in process stability, dimensional accuracy, or production quality.

Hands-on injection molding process development experience is essential. Candidates whose experience is limited to tooling design, product design, or general manufacturing management may not align with the technical requirements of this opportunity.

Interested?

If you have a strong background in scientific molding and precision thermoplastic manufacturing, we'd love to connect!

Apply today or reach out to Cullerton Group to explore this opportunity and discuss potential work arrangements.
