General Summary of Position
The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) invites applications for a full-time, open-rank, tenure-track/tenured faculty position in Nuclear Engineering beginning in September 2027.
We seek collaborative scholars pursuing innovative, high-impact research in nuclear reactor engineering, particularly the development of advanced computational, experimental, data-driven, and AI/ML-enabled methods for reactor analysis, design, safety, and operation. Areas of interest include nuclear thermal-hydraulics and heat transfer; reactor physics; multiphysics and multiscale modeling and simulation; reactor safety; and reactor design and analysis. Applications to advanced reactor systems (fission or fusion) and emerging nuclear energy technologies are particularly encouraged.
Emerging research directions involving high-fidelity and reduced-order modeling, uncertainty quantification, integration of experiments and modeling, digital engineering, advanced sensing and controls, and physics-informed hybrid modeling methods are also of interest.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish and sustain an externally funded research program, advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to collaborative research across the university. A strong commitment to teaching and mentoring is essential, including contributions to core and elective Nuclear Engineering courses, development of courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, and fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community.
Department of Chemical Engineering and Nuclear Engineering Program
UMass Lowell has a broad and growing program in nuclear science and engineering. The Department of Chemical Engineering is home to the ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with a Nuclear Engineering Option, while interdisciplinary MS and PhD programs in Nuclear (Energy) Engineering bring together faculty and resources from across the Francis College of Engineering and Kennedy College of Sciences. Complementary programs include Nuclear Physics, Radiological Sciences, and Medical Physics.
The Department of Chemical Engineering values interdisciplinary collaboration, academic excellence, innovation, and student success. Faculty engage in collaborative research across the university and with national laboratories, industry, and other academic institutions, providing opportunities for interdisciplinary research and education.
UMass Lowell’s Radiation Laboratory provides substantial nuclear research infrastructure, including a 1-MW research reactor, 5.5-MV Van de Graaff accelerator, and radiochemistry and radiation measurement facilities. Candidates whose research intersects with these capabilities will have opportunities to incorporate them into their research and educational activities.
The University of Massachusetts Lowell
The University of Massachusetts Lowell is a nationally recognized Carnegie R1 research university located 25 miles northwest of Boston in Massachusetts’ high-tech corridor. With more than 17,000 students and over $120 million in sponsored research annually, UMass Lowell provides a dynamic environment for research, education, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Wall Street Journal ranks UMass Lowell as the No. 1 public university in Massachusetts and the top public institution in the state for social mobility. The university is committed to research excellence, student success, community partnership, and a positive and inclusive campus culture.
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
- A PhD or equivalent degree in Nuclear Engineering or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
- A strong record of research appropriate to the candidate’s career stage and demonstrated potential to establish and sustain an externally funded research program.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and student mentorship.
- Interest in collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
Appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level will require a strong record of research, teaching, mentorship, and professional accomplishment commensurate with appointment at that rank.
Special Instructions to Applicants
This position is full-time, benefited, and represented by the Massachusetts Society of Professors/MTA/NEA. The anticipated salary range, pursuant to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement, lists minimum salaries of $75,000 for Assistant Professor, $85,000 for Associate Professor, and $100,000 for Professor. We also anticipate an actual minimum salary no less than $115,000 for full Professor rank. The anticipated maximum salary, depending on rank, qualifications, and departmental considerations, is not expected to exceed $205,000 for full Professor rank).
Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled.
