A Day in the Life

The Principal Manufacturing Engineer - Injection Molding provides technical leadership and subject matter expertise for injection molding manufacturing operations at Medtronic's Medtronic Energy and Component Center (MECC) in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. MECC serves as a critical manufacturing hub within Medtronic, producing batteries, capacitors, connectors, feedthroughs, and other highly specialized components that support therapies and products used across multiple Medtronic businesses worldwide.

In this role, you will serve as a key technical resource for molding operations, partnering closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Tooling, Operations, and New Product Introduction teams to ensure robust, capable, and efficient molding processes that consistently meet quality and business requirements.

As a site injection molding technical expert, the Principal Manufacturing Engineer will support approximately a number molding operations while providing technical leadership, coaching, and guidance to engineers across the organization. This role is responsible for troubleshooting complex molding and tooling challenges, qualifying new and existing molds, leading process development and equivalency qualification activities, and driving strategic initiatives that advance manufacturing capability and performance.

The successful candidate will combine deep injection molding expertise with strong communication and cross-functional leadership skills to influence technical decisions, mentor engineering talent, and help shape the future molding strategy for a manufacturing organization that delivers critical components used in life-changing medical technologies.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing, machining and material handling.
  • Designs arrangement of machines within plant facilities to ensure most efficient and productive layout.
  • Designs sequence of operations and specifies procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment and other functions that affect product performance.
  • Adapts machine or equipment design to factory and production conditions.
  • May incorporate inspection and test requirements into the production plan.
  • Inspects performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify their efficiency, and investigates and initiates corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality.
  • Develops manufacturing processes that are applicable to statistical process control, and may develop those techniques.
  • Provides guidance to engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques.

Ensures processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.

Required Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree and minimum of 7 years of relevant experience
  • OR Master's degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

OR PhD with 3 years relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing, qualifying, optimizing, or troubleshooting injection molding processes in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting mold qualification, process validation, process transfers, equivalency qualifications, or manufacturing scale-up activities.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing operations in a regulated industry such as medical device, pharmaceutical, electronics, or other high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Experience leading investigations and resolving complex molding, tooling, material, quality, or manufacturing process issues.
  • Experience with scientific molding, Design of Experiments (DOE), process capability analysis, statistical process control, or related process optimization methodologies.
  • Experience supporting tooling design, mold development, mold qualification, or capital equipment implementation projects.
  • Experience mentoring engineers, providing technical coaching, or serving as a technical lead within a manufacturing organization.
  • Experience developing technical strategies, influencing stakeholders, or supporting long-term manufacturing capability and technology roadmaps.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$123,200.00 - $184,800.00 ‌ This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
