Worth knowing

Why it is interesting. Direct ownership of gearing alloy steel selection, heat treatment and failure analysis, with a push to follow the material through the factory.

Might not be for you. Metals-focused (steel gears and bearings), so little polymer content; up to 20% domestic and international travel.

Deep specialistFast-paced BS acceptable

Adjacent materials roleApply material science fundamentals to develop materials/processes; physical metallurgy, alloy steel thermal processing, tensile/hardness testing, metallography

  • Evaluate trade-offs between material performance, cost, and manufacturability to support material selection
  • Assist in translating qualitative design needs into quantifiable material requirements and document them in material specifications
  • Develop and execute test plans to characterize application-specific material properties and translate results into design values for detailed engineering use
  • Drive root cause analysis and issue resolution of material-related issues

What You'll Bring

  • Degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent experience
  • Strong knowledge in physical metallurgy, mechanical behavior of materials, thermodynamics, and phase transformations
  • Demonstrated experience in failure modes and root cause analysis, with understanding of typical gear and bearing failures
  • Understanding of forming of steel in manufacturing and simulation (e.g., Simufact or similar)
  • Demonstrated understanding of alloy steel thermal processing methods for desired microstructure and distortion reduction
  • Experience with standard material testing methods and data interpretation (e.g., tensile testing, hardness testing, metallography)
  • Familiarity with engineering software for data analysis and visualization
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

A strong drive to go out and see the product being made and follow the material
