Job Designation

The CVD Operator/Heat Treater's job consists of the use of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), heat treat, and other high temperature resistance and induction heated vacuum furnaces, autoclaves, and ovens consistent with the manufacturing of carbon brakes and related carbon/carbon products. Furnaces may be used for carbonization, pyrolysis, heat treat, CVD, and other heating processes needed to control the life, hardness, density, or other required characteristics of carbon/carbon products.

Job Core Responsibilities

+ Load and unload carbon products onto trees, diffuser plates, modules, or other similar devices used as platforms, containers, or racks in the furnaces.

+ Assemble and disassemble trees, diffuser plates, and modules before and after each process.

+ Responsible for the safe operation of elevators, overhead cranes, mules, and prime movers (excluding tow motors). This equipment may be used during the loading and unloading of furnaces or the removal and replacement of furnace caps, tops, and doors or as other needs require.

+ Retrieve and return carbon products or assemblies such as module parts for heat treat or CVD processing from holding, staging queues, storage racks within the specified furnace and heat treat areas.

+ Required to clean nitrogen vent ports, furnace flange, or other furnace components as needed using approved methods of cleaning prior to each operation of furnace and will be required to change vacuum filters and apply vacuum grease as required.

+ Remove and replace all carbon black within the furnace before and after each process as required. Will also perform all functions relating to the extraction, containment, and replacement of used, graphitized carbon black when necessary.

+ Prepare furnaces and equipment for vacuum operations, activate and deactivate vacuum pumps and perform any and all leak checks as required for safe and efficient operation of furnaces.

+ Monitor and record all temperature, pressure, power, and gas flow meters and gages. Adjust appropriate settings and flow rates consistent with defined parameters and is responsible for maintaining all parameters throughout heating and cooling cycles.

+ Operator is responsible for the proper operations of furnaces and will immediately notify a member of supervision when equipment warning devices are triggered or equipment is not functioning properly.

+ Use of Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods are required to verify production processes and product quality. The Inspector (P-1582 classification) will validate the process.
