Role details

About our group: The Media Research and Development team within the Recording Media Organization (RMO), developing next-generation recording media technologies, including heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) and future recording concepts. Our work spans fundamental materials research, thin-film and process development, characterization, and integration of new media technologies.

About the role

- you will: Research and develop advanced magnetic materials, nanoscale magnetic structures, and magnetic multilayer thin-film architectures for heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) and future recording technologies. Investigate relationships among material composition, crystal structure, microstructure, interfaces, multilayer architecture, magnetic properties, thermal & optical behavior, and spin-dependent phenomena in nano-scale structures, to guide media design. Broad background in magnetic, optical and general thin film characterization techniques a plus.

Conduct experimental work in thin-film deposition and fabrication, multilayer stack development, process optimization, magnetic and structural characterization, thermal characterization, and quantitative data analysis. Collaborate with scientists and engineers across multidisciplinary R&D teams to advance promising concepts from fundamental investigation toward experimentally demonstrated recording-media solutions. About you: Highly driven, and a focused learner who enjoys solving complex technical problems. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and experimental skills.

Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively Your experience includes: Knowledge of magnetic materials, nanoscale magnetism, or magnetic properties Background in thin film fabrication, multilayers, heterostructures, or interface engineering Proficiency in experimental design, quantitative data analysis, and interpretation of physical mechanisms Bachelor’s degree in engineering related field (i.e.

Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Computer Engineering, Materials, Physics, or Information Technology) and 8+ years of experience or master’s degree in the same and 6+ years’ experience or PhD and 3+ years’ experience or equivalent experience and education. You might also have: Spintronics, spin-dependent transport, or magnetization dynamics Magnetic, structural, chemical, thermal, or microstructural characterization HAMR, magnetic recording, or related data storage technologies Location: Our Gold LEED-certified Fremont product-design campus drives innovation, bringing together a diverse set of engineering, design, operations, support and administrative teams.
