Role details
Position Summary
The R&D and Applications Chemist supports Esstech’s accelerated sales growth by developing and evaluating materials for customer applications and advancing qualified opportunities from initial inquiry through sampling, customer trials, and production transfer. The position works closely with the Business Development Manager, to translate customer needs into practical laboratory projects and provide timely technical support.
This is a hands-on laboratory position focused on UV-curable resins, oligomers, monomers, and formulated materials for dental, 3D printing, coatings, cosmetic, and other specialty applications. The chemist combines formulation and analytical work with direct customer interaction, clear documentation, and coordination across R&D, QC, Production, and Supply Chain.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Travel periodically with the Business Development Manager for on-site customer visits, application trials, and technical discussions, and attend relevant trade shows to support customer engagement and new business development.
Partner with Business Development to define customer requirements, target properties, test methods, sample needs, and technical acceptance criteria. Assess whether existing Esstech products, modified formulations, or new development can meet the application.
Design and conduct laboratory experiments to develop or improve polymer-based materials. Evaluate formulation variables, raw material alternatives, cure response, and application performance.
Prepare and characterize customer samples. Maintain formulation and sample traceability, summarize results, and coordinate sample shipment with the appropriate departments.
Participate in customer technical discussions with Business Development. Explain results, obtain trial feedback, troubleshoot application issues, and recommend the next development steps.
Maintain the project tracker with milestones, sample status, customer feedback, technical risks, and next actions. Flag delays and resource needs promptly.
Work with Production, QC, and Supply Chain to assess manufacturability, raw material availability, and cost considerations. Support scale-up trials and transfer approved formulations, procedures, and test requirements into manufacturing.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline.
Two to five years of relevant industrial laboratory experience preferred, particularly in monomer chemistry, resins, coatings, adhesives, or specialty materials.
Experience with formulation development, experimental design, analytical testing, and interpretation of laboratory data.
Knowledge of acrylic chemistry, urethanes, photoinitiators, pigments, or radiation-curable systems preferred.
Ability to communicate clearly with customers and colleagues, explain technical findings, and manage several development projects with defined priorities.
Strong documentation, organization, and problem-solving skills; proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
Willingness and ability to travel periodically with the Business Development Manager for customer visits and to attend relevant trade shows.
