Role details

Purpose: This position is responsible for development of adhesives & primers systems to support the north American and global automotive business and R&D development activities within Northwood plant. This position will work independently with global teams on development projects. Also, this position will support internal & external customers and collaborate with suppliers. To be successful in this position, one needs to be proactive and have good organizational and communication skills.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop/evaluate new or improved adhesive and primer systems for automotive glass and report results to OE personnel and suppliers/customers
  • Evaluate bonding to new substrates or coatings and the effect of surface treatment techniques
  • Assist process development engineers with control plans for new parts or processes by performing studies to determine the effect of process variables
  • Collaborate with suppliers to test new primers and adhesive system suitable to Pilkington products & process
  • Perform physical/mechanical testing using Instron Universal Test Machines, Impact and Torque testers, weathering equipment and other durability testing
  • Conduct chemical & physical analysis on samples using techniques such as FT-IR, DSC, and SEM-EDS
  • Perform validation testing according to customer specifications
  • Manage and conduct statistical analysis of data, communicate results. Present and discuss testing results with internal & external team and/or customers. Write technical reports in a clear, concise & timely manner.
  • Train and mentor student interns, who may assist with sample preparation, mechanical testing, and data management.
  • Manage both short-term and long-term R&D projects globally.
  • Support in maintaining chemical inventory, SDS database, and proper disposal of hazardous waste
  • Assist with Process Audits
  • Create and maintain SOPs for new and altered equipment.
  • Adhere to Northwood EHS policies and assist with recycling and other ISO14001 targets and objectives
  • Maintain Quality records (e.g. laboratory notebook and documents) in accordance with TS16949 standards
  • Adhere to NSG/Pilkington Standards of Business Conduct and its Values and Principles
  • Other duties as assigned by manager

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years experience or Master’s degree with 1-3 years in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or equivalent experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and proven analytical, organizational & communication skills.
  • Proficient in the English language (verbal and written).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience handling chemicals

Qualifications Desired

  • Working experience preferably in polymer/adhesive/primers/automotive glass industry
  • Familiarity with ASTM or other standardized test methods
  • Strong and proven leadership skills
