Role details
A Snapshot of Your Day
As a Materials & Failure Analysis Engineer, you'll play a critical role in improving the reliability and performance of advanced gas turbine components used throughout Siemens Energy's global fleet. You'll investigate component condition, determine root causes of material degradation and failures, and provide technical recommendations that directly impact fleet operation, manufacturing, repairs, and future product development.
Working alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams, suppliers, and customers, you'll apply expertise in metallurgy, coatings, materials characterization, and failure analysis to solve complex engineering challenges involving some of the world's most advanced high-temperature materials systems.
How You’ll Make An Impact
- Lead failure analysis, root cause analysis (RCA), and engineering assessments of gas turbine components using visual and non-visual evaluation methods to identify degradation mechanisms, failure origins, and opportunities to improve component reliability.
- Perform advanced materials characterization and fracture investigations using metallography, fractography, optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), chemical analysis, and other laboratory techniques to evaluate component condition and service performance.
- Serve as a technical expert in materials science, metallurgy, nickel-based superalloys, stainless steels, intermetallics, and advanced coating systems including Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs), supporting product qualification, material substitutions, procurement activities, and repair development efforts.
- Analyze failure modes associated with fatigue, creep, oxidation, corrosion, wear, and other high-temperature degradation mechanisms while providing technical recommendations to improve fleet reliability, durability, and operational performance.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, service engineering, product engineering, suppliers, and customers to support component reliability initiatives, fleet issues, failure investigations, and continuous improvement projects while managing technical schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
- Author internal and external technical reports, engineering assessments, presentations, purchase specifications, and process specifications, clearly communicating complex technical findings and recommendations to diverse stakeholders while upholding Siemens Energy's Zero Harm principles.
What You Bring
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in materials engineering, metallurgy, failure analysis, or materials characterization. More years of experience may be considered at a higher level.
- Hands-on experience investigating metallic component failures and degradation mechanisms.
- Strong understanding of superalloys, stainless steels, heat treatment processes, coatings, and material processing.
- Experience with advanced microscopy and analytical techniques including SEM, EDS, optical microscopy, and metallographic analysis.
- Experience interpreting mechanical, physical, environmental, and materials test data.
- Ability to communicate technical findings effectively through reports, presentations, and customer interactions.
- Experience working within laboratory, manufacturing, repair, aerospace, power generation, or industrial environments.
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or related field.
- Gas turbine, aerospace engine, or power generation industry experience.
- Expertise with thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), oxidation-resistant coatings, diffusion coatings, and wear-resistant coating systems.
- Experience supporting fleet, service, repair, overhaul, or life-assessment programs.
- Project leadership experience managing budgets, schedules, and cross-functional technical teams.
Export Control Requirement (ECC)
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
