Assistant Professor

Job Summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Advanced Polymer Processing and Circular Manufacturing. We seek outstanding candidates with expertise in polymer processing, polymer engineering, and circular manufacturing of polymer-based products through analytical, experimental, and/or computational approaches are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate is expected to establish an internationally recognized research program that advances the science and engineering of polymer processing and manufacturing while contributing to innovations in sustainable and resource-resilient manufacturing, de-manufacturing technologies, and data-driven approaches. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, mentor students, and contribute to the university's mission of excellence in research, education, and service. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

Development of advanced manufacturing processes and enabling technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence, big data analytics, digital twins, smart manufacturing, and Industry 4.0) for next-generation polymers and polymer composites that are stronger, lighter, more durable, and more sustainable for applications in aerospace, biomedical devices, microelectronics, energy systems, transportation, and other sectors.

Design and engineering of innovative polymer materials that either (1) exhibit enhanced properties, performance, and functionalities arising from advanced manufacturing processes or (2) possess tailored characteristics that improve manufacturability, process efficiency, and sustainability.

Development of sustainable polymer materials and manufacturing technologies, including de-manufacturing, remanufacturing, and re-/up-cycling technologies for polymers and composites. Integration of advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, and sustainability principles to create smart, resilient, and circular manufacturing systems.

The department welcomes candidates who transcend the traditional boundaries of Mechanical Engineering and can incorporate insights from polymer processing, materials innovation, advanced manufacturing, sustainability, re-/up-cycling technologies, and circular manufacturing, or related disciplines to holistically address high-impact societal problems related to the areas described above. Candidates should articulate how their research will engage and attract Mechanical Engineering students from all backgrounds.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering advances the mission of the College of Engineering to foster a respectful and inclusive environment for all members of our community.
