Job description
We design and build flight-worthy structures faster than anybody else. We are seeking a Head of Manufacturing to lead the team in day-to-day fabrication and assembly activities while growing and scaling the manufacturing and operational capabilities of the company.
You will be directing a team of build engineers and technicians to fabricate composite and metallic components, assemble structures, and fully integrate vehicles in a fast-paced, project-based environment.
Initially, you will be personally executing many of the responsibilities listed below. As the company grows, you will transition some of these responsibilities to members of your team; you will then be responsible for overseeing the execution of the task and for ensuring the quality of the outcome and work produced.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a technical expert on relevant manufacturing methods (primarily machining, composite layup, and composite structure bonding and fastening), process development, and quality control.
- Serve as people manager for the build engineering team and the technician team.
- Ensure the quality, compliance, and on-time delivery of the product and its corresponding data package (i.e. material traceability documentation, build records, etc.)
- Ensure manufacturability and buildability of designs by participating in design reviews with the design engineering team, reviewing drawings as part of the release process, and supporting build engineers with their drawing reviews.
- Develop, document, execute, and continuously improve manufacturing floor processes; including, but not limited to, processes for training and onboarding, receiving, composite layup, assembly, and build documentation.
- Develop and maintain an organized, clean, and safe facility; ensure facility layout supports manufacturing workflows. Oversee maintenance and upgrades for all equipment and areas of the facility, including office spaces.
- Lead day-to-day shop floor activities; including, but not limited to, providing oversight to daily technician tasking to ensure that schedule is met, facilitating resolution of blocking issues, and providing feedback to scheduling team regarding both the rate of execution and the feasibility of upcoming tasks.
- Support build engineers in preparing jobs to send to the floor in a timely manner by communicating build timelines, aiding in the development of assembly plans and fixtures, reviewing work instructions, and overseeing the hardware kitting process.
- Oversee and provide guidance for the execution of the build; including, but not limited to, laying up composite components, bonding and fastening composite structures, installing systems and avionics, and handing off completed deliverables to the customer.
- Oversee purchasing and inventory management for all projects and shop supplies; ensure that materials, components, and hardware are available as required to support project timelines.
- Facilitate the growth of the company from single prototype projects to low volume production by scaling and evolving processes, growing the team, and developing additional capabilities.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
- 5+ years of aerospace hardware experience, including composites
- 3+ years of lead, supervisory, or demonstrated team-lead experience
- Proficient with CAD software for solid modeling and drafting
- Strong experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, dimensional tolerances, torque requirements, fastener specifications, and material requirements
- Experience working in a prototype, low-rate production, and/or development environment
- Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on fabrication/assembly skills
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to lift, stand, bend, climb, and work around aircraft structures and manufacturing equipment
